Praised as a "shocking demonstration of just how much improvement can be brought to an already near-perfect sports car," the Ferrari 458 Italia has been selected by the Robb Report editors and a panel of guest judges as the luxury lifestyle authority's 2011 Car of the Year.

Revealed in Robb Report's March issue, which hits newsstands on February 22, the award is presented to an automobile, formally introduced in the previous year, whose technical designs, styling, and performance position it as the world's preeminent sports or luxury vehicle.

The Ferrari 458 Italia outdistanced 13 luxury and sports cars: the Audi R8 V10 Spyder, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Aston Martin V12 Vantage, Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG, Bentley Mulsanne, Maserati GranTurismo Convertible, Audi A8L, Aston Martin Rapide, BMW Alpina B7, Rolls-Royce Ghost, Jaguar XJ Supersport, Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, and Lotus Evora.

The selections resulted from extensive test-driving in California's Napa Valley by a panel of experts that included Robb Report editor in chief Brett Anderson, automotive consultant Robert Ross, and correspondents Paul Dean and Paul Meyers. These journalists were joined by more than 50 guest judges, including executives and Robb Report readers.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the new holiday destination will be the world’s first Ferrari theme park and largest attraction of its kind to open in 2010.

The theme park will feature an iconic sleek red roof that’s said to be directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT body, spanning 2,152,782 square feet and carrying the largest Ferrari logo ever created.

There will be a number of attractions, including rides for children of all ages and the world’s fastest rollercoaster, travelling at speeds exceeding 124 mph. Another ride will rocket passengers through the roof and to a height of 203 feet to simulate the G-forces experienced by a drivers in an F1 car.

The site is located on Yas Island on the North East side of Abu Dhabi’s mainland, which is about a 10-minute drive from Abu Dhabi International Airport and 50 minutes from Yas Marina Circuit, which will host the inaugural Abu Dhabi GP later this year.

It is not yet necessary for Ferrari to appoint a number one driver for the rest of the 2008 championship, according to Felipe Massa.

The Brazilian and his teammate, reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen, are currently tied on points at the top of the drivers’ standings with McLaren rival Lewis Hamilton.

Massa told the French morning newspaper Le Figaro:

“The team does not have to make a decision as long as things are not leaning either one way or the other.”

In previous years, Michael Schumacher was the undisputed number one driver, receiving the balance of the Italian marque’s effort to lift the drivers’ crown.

But Massa said last year he was also on equal terms with Raikkonen, until his chances took a final hit at the Italian grand prix.

“From then on, there remained a small chance for Kimi. To help him to do it, the team did everything for him, myself included.

“This time I hope it will be my turn.”

In the interview, Massa also played down suggestions Ferrari may be able to vacate his seat in the near future — perhaps by means of performance clauses.

“No. I have a contract until the end of 2010 and I feel perfectly comfortable in the team,”

Neal’s View: Massa needs to get focused if he is going to challenge. All those spins at Silverstone, then he gifted Hamilton the lead in Germany.

Porsche vs Ferrari

Porsche and Ferrari are German and Italian sides of the same
coin, interpretations of the sports car idea. Both founded by a
dominant patriarch, both honed in racing, both more than 50
years old, both with engineering and styling integrity. Whether on
the track of Le Mains or on the streets, the two have always been
put head-to-head and compared. Even the most naive motorist
associates these two names with both performance and style.

We’ve decided to compare the methodical Porsche 911 Carrera
4S and the passionate Ferrari F430 because both of them astonish
with their performance while attempting to maintain a reasonable
amount of practicality but do not pretend to be anything other than
sports cars.

A modern sports car should feature these characteristics: it should be
started easily, maneuvered around town, blasted on a couple of
country roads, it looks and performs the part on a racetrack but at the
same time it is very safe.

The easier way to separate the two cars is by measuring figures since
both of them have mastered the modern sports car requirements and
basically there’s no other way to choose between these two phenomenal
cars.

What initially impresses is Ferrari’s lightning fast 4-second 0-100km/h
acceleration and thrilling exhaust tone. As the occupants are pinned to
the seats, the new generation 4.3-litre V8 pushes out 368 snarling
kilowatts. Porsche’s acceleration also offers that kick in the pants a
super car should deliver, although it is 0.8 seconds slower at the 100 km/k
mark.

With such acceleration performance, it comes natural for both cars to
excel in the braking department. The two cars offer optional ceramic
discs for impressive stopping.

Porsche’s engine gets the upper hand as it is more refined and on
the economy rank leaps ahead Ferrari with a 11.8 liters per 100 km
as opposed to 18.3 liters. Both cars deliver the power through impressive
6-speed gearboxes and offer top rate handling performance.

Both F430 and Carrera4S offer great interior comfort and even if the
space is limited, the occupants don’t feel claustrophobic and flustered.
Although an impressive mix of suede, carbon fiber and aluminum abound
in the Ferrari, the Italians stand no chance when it comes to the high finish
level attained by the Germans.

Speed and silence are key elements for any super car. The look and
appearance is the biggest draw card. The Carrera 4S is a typical Porsche,
despite the new proportions. It is a great looking car, like any other 911 but
somehow the styling no longer creates the jaw dropping reaction that the
Ferrari does. Indeed, traditionalists may say that Porsche pays homage to
its roots, but the truth is that Ferrari F430 simply draws the attention.

However, even if Ferrari F430 takes your breath away with its appearance,
the super car title goes to the Porsche Carrera 4S with a more complete all
round package.

The Ferrari GTO (often referred to as Ferrari 288 GTO) was an exotic homologation (thus the O) of the Ferrari 308 GTB produced in 1984 through 1986.

Background
The Ferrari GTO was built to compete in the new Group B Race series and a minimum of 200 cars were required for homologation. However as only Ferrari and Porsche, with their 959, entered, the series was soon abandoned leaving just the Group B Rally championship. The Porsche 959 {961} only raced three times in Group B, but the 288 GTO never raced and all 272 cars built remained purely road cars.
Engine
The GTO was based on the mid-engined, rear wheel drive 308 GTB. The 288 refers to its 2.8 liter V8 engine, though, as it used a de-bored (by 1 mm) V8 with twin IHI turbochargers, intercoolers, and Weber-Marelli fuel injection. The 2855 cc engine capacity was dictated by the FIA’s requirement for a Turbocharged engine’s capacity to be multiplied by 1.4. This gave the GTO a theoretical engine capacity of 3997 cc, just under the Group B limit of 4.0 litres.

Unlike the 308, the engine was mounted longitudinally, using the 308’s rear boot space. The wheelbase was 110 mm (4.3 in) longer at 2450 mm (96.5 in), and the track was widened also. With 400 hp (almost 140 hp per liter) and 366 ft·lbf (496 N·m) of torque, the GTO was an impressive performer. 0-60 mph times were in the upper 4 second range and Ferrari claimed 0-125 mph (201 km/h) in 15 seconds flat. Top speed was a staggering 190 mph (306 km/h).
Evoluzione
Ferrari also built 5 288 GTO Evoluzione models with more aggressive and aerodynamic body styling and increased power. The engine in the Evoluzione originally put out as much as 650 hp; however, this was dialed down to 450 hp after Group B was banned as a whole in 1986. These cars form the clearest visual link between the 288 GTO and the F40, soon to follow.

Stefano Domenicali has declared himself confident of a Ferrari comeback in Canada, after a truly appalling Monaco GP.

For the first time since 1979, 2 Ferrari’s locked out the front row in Monaco but poor weather and a series of bad decisions and accidents led Felipe Massa to finish 3rd and Raikkonen to finish 9th. With Lewis Hamilton winning the race, it pushed Raikkonen off the top of the drivers title race and heads were certainly convinced to be rolling back in Italy.

However, the team principal is sure his drivers can take the fight to McLaren in Montreal where Lewis Hamilton scored his first ever race win last season.

“It’s easy to say but difficult to do it. For sure, in terms of preparation, we are much more confident of the situation ad hopefully it should be different from what we saw last year,” said Domenicali.

“We want to be positive for Canada because we take the same kind of approach but we need to be humble because the competition is always very strong.

“As we always said, we mustn’t forget that we won four races out of six, and that’s something important. As I’ve always said, the championship will be very very long.

“In these conditions, you’re going to lose some points, then the situation that happened with Lewis today means he’s leading the championship, so it will be very, very long.”

Ferrari To Hit Indian Roads By Next Year

Italian car major Fiat group is eyeing to launch its premium car brand Ferrari in India, which will soon lighten on the Indian roads by next year (2009).

Ferrari’s entry into the Indian market is mainly aimed at ensuring speed delivery of vehicles to the customers.

Ferrari kicked off its India campaign by launching the 'Magic India Discovery Drive' with elephant as its mascot, to give 50 journalists from across the globe a feel about India.

Mr Davide Kluzer, head of press office for Ferrari said, “During this tour, we will understand the technological challenges we are going to face in India and we will collect experience from here.”

Hormaz Sorabjee, editor of Autocar India said, “The base Ferrari model is available for Rs 2.2 crore, including the import duty. Upon entry in India, the costs may go down slightly by about a couple of lakhs.”

Ferrari, which entered China in 2004, sold 177 vehicles last year, 27 more than predicted. It expects China to become its fifth largest market in six years. Ferrari is using its China strategy in India.

Currently, the vehicles are directly shipped from Italy by the buyers in India. Ferrari’s initial plan is to open showrooms in the country.

Jean Todt has stepped down as Ferrari CEO(having already handed over control of the racing team to Stefano Domenicali) and has been replaced by Amadeo Felisa. To be quite honest there will be few who will be sad to see the Frenchman go. He was definitely not the most popular guy in the paddock. But, on the other hand, Todt was never trying to win popularity contests and his unique obsessional and ruthless approach to Formula One brought him and Ferrari extraordinary success. Some say that the Scuderia has already returned to a more charming and attractive mood without Todt goading everyone in and out of the team. But there are risks involved here. What would you rather have, a friendly team that loses its way or an aggressive, cynical and ruthless outfit that wins?

Turkish Grand Prix - Sunday Race - Massa Wins

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa scored his third successive victory at the Istanbul park circuit and his second of this season as he staved of the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton to take the chequered flag at the Turkish Grand Prix. Pole-sitter Massa was briefly challenged - and passed on the 24th lap - by an aggressive Hamilton but his two-stop strategy compared to Hamilton’s three-stop-strategy stood him in good stead and he clinched victory by just under four seconds. Teammate Kimi Raikkonen was third in a bravura display in spite of a damaged front-wing and an engine that was into its second race. BMW and Renault were the usual best-of-the rest with Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld finishing 4th and 5th with Fernando Alonso in 6th. Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg took up 7th and 8th place respectively.

Well, somebody just shell out close to $11 million just to get this Ferrari. A 1961 Ferrari California Spyder was recently sold for $10,894,900 at an auction in Maranello, Italy.

According to RM Auctions and Sotheby’s, the amount is the highest price ever paid for a vintage car in an auction. The previous record of the most expensive car in an auction was held by a Ferrari as well, the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO and this car fetched $10,756,000 in 1990.

The high price of the Ferrari was a reflection of the strong demand for vintage Ferraris in Europe. It was noted that in recent months, Ferraris have been selling privately between collectors for amounts exceeding $11 million. But what makes the California Spyder extra special aside from the fact that this is a Ferrari? This car was once owned by James Coburn, an actor. Coburn bought the car in 1964 shortly after finishing the movie, ‘The Great Escape’.
